Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) again trounced rival browsers in a test of their malware-blocking abilities, catching 81% of attack code-infected sites, according to a testing company.
IE8’s skills at sniffing out malware sites improved by 17% since March, said Rick Moy, president of NSS Labs, the firm that conducted the benchmarks. The testing was sponsored by Microsoft’s security team.
Moonlight 2.0, which is open source software that puts Microsoft’s Silverlight rich Internet application technology on Linux, was offered up as a beta release on Monday, the chief developer of the technology said in a blog entry.
“This means that Moonlight 2.0 is now feature-complete and we consider it ready to test against Silverlight 2.0 sites. Users who have installed Moonlight 2.0 previously will be offered a chance next time they start Firefox to upgrade to the beta,” de Icaza said.
Yahoo Mail is still the world’s most popular webmail service, though Google Gmail is the fastest growing.
Yahoo added 20 million users in the year to July according to Comscore, growing its user base by 22 per cent to 106 million.
The second most popular service was Microsoft’s Hotmail with 47 million users.
But it only increased by three per cent year on year.
Gmail grew 46 per cent and now has 37 million users.

Microsoft and mobile phone giant Nokia said Wednesday that they have agreed to form a broad alliance that will begin by porting Office Mobile applications to run on Nokia’s Symbian operating system.
The deal, with will see Office first appearing on Nokia’s (NYSE: NOK) Eseries enterprise devices, marks the first time that Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) has ported its Office applications to run on any smartphone operating system besides Windows Mobile.
As Facebook continues its experiments to make sharing more efficient, the company is now testing a “faster, simpler version of Facebook” called Facebook Lite. Facebook Lite is now live at lite.facebook.com for those users included in the beta test, but Facebook accidentally showed the beta test invite to more users than are actually in the test earlier this evening. Facebook says it is running the test primarily in countries “where we are seeing lots of new users coming to Facebook for the first time and are looking to start off with a more simple experience.”
A U.S. federal court has ordered Microsoft Corp to stop selling some versions of its widely used Word software in the United States in two months, ruling in favor of a small Canadian firm that accused the software giant of violating its patents.
A U.S. district court in Texas ruled in favor of i4i Ltd in its long-running patent dispute against Microsoft, slapping more than $290 million in damages on Microsoft and issuing an injunction preventing the world’s top software company from selling versions of Word that contain the disputed patent technology.
